Though it was an exciting weekend of college baseball, there is no movement in my top 5. Vanderbilt, the nation's top team, boosted their resume with a sweep of Auburn, a top 25 team according to some publications. #2 South Carolina went extra innings on Saturday, but still swept Kentucky. Georgia Tech lost a game this week which makes #3 Virginia the hottest Omaha contender in the nation as they swept Virginia Tech to move to 28-2. #4 Florida rolled over Tennessee and # 5 Arizona State swept then #24 Oregon.
We lost three teams from last year's top 25 list. You already know what happened to the aforementioned Oregon squad. I probably left former #20 Clemson on this list a week too long and now that they've lost 4 weekend series, it's clear to me they don't belong. Former #23 Baylor may hang on in other top 25 lists, but they lost 2 of 3 to Kansas so I booted them. If they take 2 of 3 against #9 Texas next week, they'll be back.
Next week will provide a plethora of intra top 25 action and I expect more movement up top.
Next Weekend's Key Matchups:
#22 Alabama @ #1 Vanderbilt
#3 Virginia @ #11 Georgia Tech
#5 Arizona State @ #18 Oregon State
#12 North Carolina @ #7 Florida State
#15 California @ #21 Arizona
| Rank | Team | W-L | Last Week | Previous | Comments |
| 1. | Vanderbilt | 26-3 | 1-0 v. Tennessee-Martin, 3-0 @ Auburn | 1 | Dores took 2 of 3 on the road to Arkansas last weekend and now went to Auburn and swept the Tigers. Both opponents are top 25 caliber. |
| 2. | South Carolina | 22-5 | 1-0 v. Citadel, 3-0 v. Kentucky | 2 | The Gamecocks are one of the best teams in the nation and they still haven't finalized their weekend rotation. |
| 3. | Virginia | 28-2 | 1-0 v. George Washington, 3-0 @ Virginia Tech | 3 | Sunday's win marked 9 straight. and Tuesday's win against Radford will be 10. Traveling to Georgia Tech next weekend will be a challenge. |
| 4. | Florida | 24-5 | 0-1 v. Florida State, 3-0 v. Tennessee | 4 | I still think they're the best team in the nation but the three teams in front of them haven't lost a series as Florida did last weekend to #2 South Carolina. |
| 5. | Arizona State | 21-6 | 3-0 v. Oregon | 5 | ASU held #24 Oregon to 3 runs in 3 games. |
| 6. | Texas A&M | 22-6 | 1-0 @ UT Arlington, 2-1 @ Kansas State | 7 | While the top 5 in the nation are clear, 6-11 could fall in nearly any order. |
| 7. | Florida State | 21-7 | 1-0 v. Florida, 2-1 @ Maryland | 11 | Perhaps I'm weighting the midweek win against #4 Florida a little high, but jump could be even more but for the 5-0 loss to the Terps on Saturday. |
| 8. | Cal State Fullerton | 20-8 | 1-0 v. UCLA, 3-0 @ UC Davis | 8 | The midweek win against the Bruins do more for me then sweeping a week UC Davis squad. |
| 9. | Texas | 21-7 | 1-0 v. Oral Roberts, 3-0 v. 3-0 v. Missouri | 10 | Texas sweeps Missouri a team in which Oklahoma split a with last weekend. Thus by Little League Logic, Texas is better than Oklahoma….this week. |
| 10. | Oklahoma | 22-6 | 3-0 v. Texas Tech | 9 | Oklahoma gets back on track by putting up 29 runs this weekend. |
| 11. | Georgia Tech | 23-6 | 0-1 v. Mercer, 2-1 @ Duke | 6 | Georgia Tech's hot streak and 16 game winning streak has come to an end. Jed Bradley should never lose to Duke as he did on Saturday. |
| 12. | North Carolina | 26-4 | 0-1 v. Charlotte, 3-0 v. Clemson | 16 | Impressive sweep over Clemson who was a preseason top 10 team but has now lost 4 series. |
| 13. | Stanford | 13-7 | 1-0 v. St. Mary's, 2-1 @ Washington St. | 12 | Stanford blew a big lead on Friday night costing them a sweep. |
| 14. | Fresno St. | 20-3 | 2-1 v. San Francisco | 13 | Fresno had more trouble with San Francisco than they should have. |
| 15. | California | 19-6 | 1-0 v. San Francisco, 2-1 v. Southern California | 15 | So. Justin Jones and former White Sox Draftee ('09- 7th Round) emerging as the staff ace. |
| 16. | TCU | 18-9 | 0-1 v. Stephen F. Austin, 3-0 v. Air Force | 14 | Though they've been inconstant, the weekend rotation of Winkler, Purke and Maxwell will be imposing in post season play. |
| 17. | UCLA | 14-9 | 0-1 v. Cal State Fullerton | 15 | Like TCU and Texas before them, the pitching staff exceeds their offense which will hurt them in stretches throughout the regular season, but they will be tough in the post season. |
| 18. | Oregon State | 20-7 | 2-1 @ Arizona | 22 | After an 18-0 loss on Friday it looks like the Beavers might fall off this list, but then they took the next two against then #16 Arizona. |
| 19. | LSU | 20-8 | 1-0 v. McNeese St, 2-1 v. Mississippi | 19 | Many thought LSU would find a freshman Ace this season, most thought it would be Kevin Gausman. Instead it's friday starter Kurt McCune who's now 5-0. |
| 20. | Southern Mississippi | 22-5 | 1-0 v. Mississippi, 3-0 v. UCF | 21 | UCF had cracked a few top 25 lists last week, yet the Golden Eagles had no trouble with them. |
| 21. | Arizona | 20-9 | 2-0 v. New Mexico, 1-2 v. Oregon State | 18 | Kurt Heyer was brilliant in route to an 18-0 win on Friday but the Wildcats lost the next two. It won't get any easier this week with a midweek game against Arizona State and a weekend series against #15 California. |
| 22. | Alabama | 21-9 | 0-1 v. UAB, 1-0 v. South Alabama, 2-1 v. Arkansas | NR | With LSU's slow start in conference play, Alabama might be the class of the SEC West….for now. |
| 23. | Rice | 21-11 | 1-0 v. Houston, 1-0 v. Sam Houston State, 3-0 v. Marshall. | NR | Rice fell off this list last week following their series loss to UCF, but their 5-0 week is redemption enough to |
| 24. | Oklahoma State | 21-7 | 1-0 v. Oklahoma Wesleyan, 2-1 v. Nebraska | 25 | Cowboys should handle Missouri next weekend, but the following weekend, Oklahoma will be a measuring stick. |
| 25. | Louisville | 18-9 | 1-0 v. Western Kentucky, 2-1 v. West Virginia | NR | Louisville spent two weeks on this list in early March but fell off after a series loss to Xavier. With the slow start of Connecticut, the Cardinals may be the class of the Big East. |
Dropped out: Clemson (20), Baylor (23), Oregon (24)
