Let's take a closer look at the return that the Royals are receiving:
Alcides Escobar, SS - Escobar was ranked as the top prospect in the Brewers system heading into both the 2009 and 2010 seasons by Baseball America and he was my #17 ranked prospect in all of baseball entering the 2010 season. While Escobar is renown for his defense, he was expected to hit at a higher level than the .235/.288/.326 line he produced for Milwaukee as a rookie in 2010.
Lorenzo Cain, OF - Entering the 2010 season, Cain was the #8 ranked prospect in the Brewers system by Baseball America. The center fielder made his MLB debut last year where he hit .306 in 147 ABs and stole 7 bags. He should be an immediate impact player in Kansas City where he could steal 30 bases.
Jake Odorizzi, RHP - With the graduation of Escobar and Cain from their prospect eligibility in 2010 and the trade earlier this month of Brett Lawrie, Odorizzi would have been ranked as my top prospect in Milwaukee heading into 2011. Odorizzi, a supplemental 1st round pick in the 2008 draft (#32 overall), took a step forward in 2010. The 20 year old went 7-3 with a 3.68 ERA 1.152 WHIP and 10.1 K/9 in the Midwest League.
Is this a large enough return for a player with the talent and accomplishments of the 2009 Cy Young Award winning Greinke? I don't suppose it's much fun to tell you that it's too soon to tell but it is. The haul is certainly more than what the Indians received when they dealt Cliff Lee to the Phillies for Lou Marson, Jason Donald, Carlos Carrasco and Jason Knapp in 2009. It's also doesn't hold up to the Kings Ransom the Rangers received (Elvis Andrus, Neftali Feliz, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Matt Harrison and Beau Jones) from the Braves in exchange for Mark Teixeira in 2007.
